This painting started off as an illustration of a short story, but somewhere in the middle I decided to personalize it. The symbolism in the painting is from the story, such as the three men in the background, as protagonists of the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil trilogy. The tree is the prototype of the Tree of Life, depicting the endless cycle of the hunter and the hunted, with the snake about to prey on its helpless victim, while the vulture expectantly waits. The landscape in the foreground is littered simultaneously with snakes and flowers, reflective of negative and positive elements within the range of human emotion. The border is made from a web of fetuses in their various stages of development.
