In the third and last painting,
when it is time for the hare to give up his life, he decides not to go
according to plan, and instead challenges his destiny by exercising his free
will. He tricks the lion into believing that another lion is feeding on his
share. The hare lures the lion to a well. The lion upon seeing his own
reflection, immediately assumes that it’s the other lion and lunges into the
well, thereby bringing an end to the misery of the animals. The story in
detail, of course has many shades of meaning and moral conclusions, but the
main lesson that comes through is that the enemy you fight is essentially the
enemy within yourself. |
